When people picture a hyena, they often imagine the spotted hyenas seen in movies and wildlife documentaries. Sahara and Sirocco are striped hyenas, a separate species with a distinctive appearance and way of life.
Striped hyenas have dark stripes across their bodies and legs, large pointed ears, and a mane along their backs that can stand upright when they feel threatened. Although they may resemble dogs, hyenas belong to their own animal family, called Hyaenidae.
Native to parts of Africa, the Middle East, and Asia, striped hyenas are primarily active at night. Their keen senses help them find food, and their powerful jaws allow them to consume bones and other remains that many animals leave behind.
Striped hyenas play an important role in keeping their environments healthy. As scavengers, they consume animal remains and help recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.
These often misunderstood animals are an essential part of the natural world. Learning about their role helps us appreciate why protecting them matters.
Striped hyenas are currently considered Near Threatened globally. Their wild populations face challenges that could place them at greater risk without continued conservation efforts.
